For many women, a missed period is one of the most harrowing experiences she can go though. Naturally, her first thought is that she may be pregnant – probably not the best news unless she was actually trying to conceive. However, it is extremely important to note that the period cycle is actually very delicate and can be disrupted for many reasons, pregnancy being only one of those. Of course, if you do miss a period, it’s a good idea to take a pregnancy test to rule that out as a possible reason for the occurrence. It’s also a good idea to learn more about periods such as issues that can cause a woman to miss a period.

Stress or Major Life Changes

One of the most common reasons for a missed period after actual pregnancy is stress. A woman’s period cycle is actually more delicate than many people realise. This being the case, she can easily wind up missing one or more periods due to life circumstances like job changes, relocation, major shifts in the status of a relationship and much more. Stress can lessen the body’s production of the hormone GnRH, an important factor in the ovulation/menstruation cycle. The solution is often to slow down a little. Once the woman becomes more relaxed and slips back into a normal routine, her periods tend to return.

Illness of Health Changes

Another major reason for shifts in the cycle of a period is illness. If you miss a period but happened to have been ill earlier in the month, it’s more than a little likely that your illness threw your body off kilter enough to disrupt your delicate menstrual cycle. Women who have chronic illnesses may regularly miss periods, so if you suffer from such conditions, it’s important to talk to your doctor about the matter. He or she may be able to prescribe medications or suggest methods for keeping your period cycle more regular.

Weight Fluctuations and Eating Disorders

If you miss a period and pregnancy, illness, or stress isn’t the culprit, you might take a look at your weight in an attempt to get some answers. Drastic weight gain, rapid weight loss, or even just major changes in the activity level of a given individual can cause major disruptions in a woman’s delicate period cycle. If you’ve recently lost or gained a lot of weight, this is a very probably cause for your missed period. If you suffer from any sort of eating disorder, you may experience regular disruptions in your cycle.

Medical Conditions

There are a number of different medical conditions out there that can cause a woman to miss her period, including but not limited to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). If you’ve been missing periods, it’s always a good idea to visit your physician in order to get answers. You could be pregnant or suffering from a condition that affects the regularity of your cycle.
